MBB Maternity Clinic: Everything you need to know

Thank you for coming to see us at the MBB Maternity clinic. We’re hoping that we can make your experience as comfortable as possible. Firstly, it’s important that you know that throughout the process you will be in control and we will take everything at your pace. There is no pressure to talk about anything you don’t want to, and we will be guided by you. Whether you are coming to us for a pre-pregnancy appointment, or you are already pregnant, we are happy to be led by you. You can discuss concerns you have, aspects of pregnancy and labour which you may need practical support with, and anything else that’s on your mind.

The ethos of our clinic is that – it is every woman’s right to care for her body and health. We know it can be difficult to express what you need during pregnancy, and that’s why we’re here to help with that. We are there to support you and meet your needs. It is your body, and we are simply there to ensure that you feel as safe as possible throughout pregnancy, labour, and post-natally. Our clinic is within The Royal London Hospital and staffed only by women. Staff are also fully aware of the effects of sexual violence and we can work with you to make sure that your maternity care happens on your terms, and in the way you choose.

Here is guide explaining what happens on the day you visit us.

Before you come to visit

Please do let us know what tea or coffee you like, if there’s any type of cake you like (any unusual food craving requests are welcome too!), and if you have any favourite magazines or newspapers you’d like us to order in for you. We will make sure these are there for you, ready for your visit. If there’s anything else you can think of please do let us know, we’d be happy to cater to requests.

Next, have a think about what you would like to discuss and how you feel about your pregnancy, the delivery, and afterwards. You may want to think about what support you would like, the things you would like better explained about your pregnancy and delivery, and anything else that you feel is important for you. Every woman is individual, and we are there for you to spill out your concerns and to support you. You can choose to birth with us at the MBB Maternity Clinic if you want to, but certainly don’t have to.

If you’re coming to us for a pre-pregnancy appointment we’re looking forward to seeing you too! Whether you’re not sure if you want a baby, whether you plan on pregnancy now or in a decade, we’re happy to be there for you. We’re happy to answer questions, concerns, explain things and be a support. We want you to feel in control and informed.

Finding us

Please come to the 8th Floor of the Children and Women’s Centre at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel Road, London, E1 1BB.

Here are the walking directions

If you can, please leave plenty of time for finding us. This way you will arrive far more relaxed and less stressed!

Just to let you know, you’ll be walking through the hospital’s Birth Centre, so you might overhear the odd baby cry or groan of labour. If you think this might be difficult for you, just let us know in advance and we’ll do everything we can to help.

Running late? Just give Karen a call on 0141 278 2517.

When you arrive

One of our MBB volunteers will come and collect you and bring you through to where we’re based. They’ll then make you a cup of tea or coffee and there’ll be a comfortable space for you to sit down with any magazines or newspapers you have requested.

You can then come in and have a chat with Kade and Emma, our midwives. You have one hour with us, and we will come up with a plan that you are happy with. It’s perfectly okay to feel emotional during your appointment– we understand that, and you don’t have to apologise for it. The opposite is true too. Some women prefer not to talk about anything difficult during the session, and that’s fine too.

There are plenty of other things you may want, and this is completely fine. We can talk through this and we will make sure it happens. We will also discuss relaxation techniques, breathing techniques, and take you through our aromatherapy kit to see if this could help you feel relaxed. The clinic is about tailoring things so they are right for you. Please don’t feel anxious, because you are in control throughout the whole process and we are there to support you.

After your session

You are welcome to stay in our waiting area and help yourself to more tea and magazines/newspapers. You can stay here for as long as you like and relax. You don’t have to leave straight after your appointment, only when you feel ready to. If you need to book another session with us we can do that for you.

After attending your session with us, please do something nice for yourself! Please be proud for booking, attending, and looking after yourself in the way you deserve. Please let us know at any stage if you have any ideas for how we can improve our service. We’d love to hear from you.
